Position Summary:
Adams Clinical is seeking a dedicated and experienced Inpatient Unit (IPU) Manager to lead operations for our newly established research inpatient unit in Bronx, NY. This facility supports cutting-edge clinical trials focused on investigational treatments for acute schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions.
This role requires a licensed Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) with demonstrated leadership and clinical experience in inpatient psychiatric or behavioral health settings. The IPU Manager will play a key clinical role, including medication administration, dispensing, and prescribing within scope, in accordance with New York State regulations, DEA requirements, and federal guidelines.
The IPU Manager will oversee all operations of the inpatient unit, including the management, training, and supervision of Mental Health Technicians (MHTs). They will collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and study physicians, making clinical decisions and providing patient care within scope, aligned with study protocols and standard medical practice. The role also includes procedural and clinical support across inpatient and outpatient studies, as well as collaboration with outpatient operational and medical teams as needed to ensure smooth care coordination and optimize site efficiency and quality.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational & Clinical Oversight
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the inpatient research unit, ensuring all studies are conducted in compliance with study protocols, GCP, and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with Principal Investigators, study physicians, and Clinical Operations to manage participants during their inpatient stay and maintain alignment with outpatient study timelines. Provide clinical care for psychiatric inpatients, including assessment, diagnosis, medication management, and monitoring, making treatment decisions within scope of practice in accordance with study protocols and standard medical practice. Escalate or consult with the PI and study physicians when indicated.
- Manage, train, and support unit staff, including trial liaisons, Mental Health Technicians (MHTs), and overnight staff.
- Support coordination of admissions, discharges, and inpatient research procedures, ensuring a smooth transition between outpatient and inpatient phases of participation.
- Develop, implement, and ensure adherence to de-escalation protocols, safety practices, and behavioral management guidelines. Train and support staff in these practices to maintain a safe therapeutic environment for participants and unit staff.
- Maintain appropriate documentation and contribute to FDA or sponsor audit readiness and quality initiatives.
- Provide general clinical and procedural support to both inpatient and outpatient research activities as needed, including assistance with tasks such as investigational product (IP) administration (e.g., subcutaneous, intravenous), phlebotomy, vital sign collection, ECGs, and clinical results documentation or uploads.
- Support and oversee medication administration, dispensation, and prescribing within the provider’s professional scope and in compliance with all New York State and federal regulations, site SOPs, and sponsor requirements.
- Partner with site leadership to support the training and competency development of staff involved in clinical procedures across both inpatient and outpatient operations.
- Promote consistent communication and workflow efficiency between inpatient and outpatient teams to optimize participant experience and study execution.
Leadership & Staff Development
- Provide leadership and oversight for inpatient staff, ensuring accountability, professionalism, and a culture of safety and respect.
- Oversee performance management, coaching, and development of Mental Health Technicians (MHTs) and other inpatient support staff.
- Support onboarding, training, and ongoing competency development for all IPU personnel.
- Foster collaboration and clear communication across interdisciplinary teams, including clinical, operational, and administrative functions.
Quality & Safety
- Ensure compliance with all inpatient study, regulatory, and safety standards.
- Oversee controlled substance management, investigational product accountability, and adherence to emergency protocols.
- Monitor participant well-being and proactively address safety or operational concerns.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and advanced healthcare degree as either PA (MPAS, MSPAS, or MHS) with a PA-C certification; OR as a Nurse Practitioner (MSN or DNP) with board certification in respective specialty is required. Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health strongly preferred.
- Unrestricted licensure to perform full scope of authorized practice in New York State is required.
- Active DEA registration in New York or eligibility to obtain DEA registration is preferred.
- Previous experience working on an inpatient unit is required; psychiatric inpatient experience strongly preferred.
- Prior experience managing staff is required. Overseeing unit operations strongly preferred.
- Clinical research experience is strongly preferred but not required—training will be provided for the right candidate.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, research-focused environment.
- Prior experience with phlebotomy and IV placement is a plus.

Schedule:
- Full-time, 8-hour shift, Monday to Friday.
- Expectation of some nights and/or weekends as required to maintain operations.
